USA Roster

With just 47 days left till the World Cup begins on June 11 in South Africa, the next step is the selection of rosters for each team. The roster of 30 players must be submitted on May 11. For the U.S., some things are quite uncertain at this point due to about 9 injuries of players that would almost certainly be on the World Cup squad. Charlie Davies, Oguchi Onyewu, Bennie Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Jay Demerit, Ricardo Clark, Brian Ching, Jermaine Jones, and Clint Dempsey have suffered injuries have made all U.S. fans nervous over the last 6 months. It seems that Clint Dempsey is fully recovered and game fit. Holden has begun training with Bolton almost 2 months after having his leg broken against the Netherlands. Onyewu has begun training with AC Milan but hasn’t played since his injury last October. Though Davies has made a remarkable recovery, he is clearly not ready for the rigors of a club match, much less a World Cup game. Clark has sat the bench since joining his new club in Frankfurt because of injury. I’m not going to go into the remaining injuries because this is beginning to depress me. Here’s an interesting article on The USMNT Contingency Plans.

So where is the U.S. team at this point? Let me suggest 30 players I would like to see on the roster if all are recovered from injuries. I’ll put a (?) by those with injuries and a possible fill in for them.

Goalkeepers: Tim Howard and Marcus Hahneman.

Defenders: Oguchi Onyewu (?-Jimmy Conrad), Carlos Bocanegra, Jay Demerit (?-Danny Califf), Jonathan Spector, Clarence Goodson, Cory Gibbs, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Bornstein (I could see Bobby Convey and/or DeMarcus Beasley in the LB role if Bocanegra has to play centrally.)

Midfielders: Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Bennie Feilhaber, Sasha Kljestan, Stuart Holden (?-), Jermaine Jones (?-Kyle Bekerman)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Charlie Davies (?-Eddie Johnson: is playing a lot for his club in Greece and looking the best he’s ever looked), Connor Casey, Brian Ching (?-Edson Buddle)

This list is just some of the names that I think we’ll see. But who really knows. When the boys show up for camp on May 15 I’m sure there will be names I’ve not listed. Probably names like Torres and Adu could even pop up.

What do you think? Who will the starting 11 against England be on June 12?

Squad vs. Holland in February.

Super Dad

Jennifer has been away from the house since Thursday morning. For 3 days, Super Dad has been called upon to deal with OVERDRAMATIC PRESCHOOLER and 7 YEAR OLD WOLVERINE. Super Dad doesn’t mind dealing with these 2 arch enemies. His only nemesis that can be more frustrating is MEANIE MOM. But it definitely helps to have MEANIE MOM around to deal with the younger more energetic enemies. There have been many issues that have caused Super Dad to use his super powers. The defining moment was last night. Overdramatic Preschooler asked me a question and kept asking it over and over. After about the fifth time, Super Dad responded with, “I heard you the first time, Anna!” At that point, Overdramatic Preschooler pulled out the kryptonite and fired back, “If your not talking you can’t hear me Daddy.” Spoken like a true female. And to prove her point, I can’t even remember what the question was now.

Being a Dad is fun. It’s much more fun when you have a great relationship with your wife, the mother of the children. Over the past couple of years, I’ve probably spent more time alone with the kids than Jennifer. The last 2 summers, she spent 5 weeks each summer away from home getting her Masters in Music Education at William Carey. However, Super Dad plans to have his revenge this summer. I’ll be in South Africa for 16 days for the World Cup.

I honestly don’t see how single parents do it. When you’re taking care of the kids alone, you realize how easy it is to neglect very simple things just to have a moment of peace. God has to give you a true compassion and love for your children, just like He has for us. “As a father has compassion on hisĀ children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.” (Psalm 103:13) We love our kids and pray for them every day. Don’t ever avoid dealing w/ your kids. Just morph into the ultimate parental personality God has created and punished you to be.
